December 23rd is the busiest shopping day before Christmas.
Hands down.
It’s meltdown status.
It was always our highest volume day, and everyone on staff worked that day because our store hours were so long.
Although it can feel chaotic, it was one of my favorite days to work because everyone was involved.
We’d have theme days during the week leading up to Christmas - like Wear All Black Day - and we’d support each other and bring snacks to share.
This year, the 23rd falls on a Saturday.
Hold on to your butts.
It’s gonna be mayhem, ya’ll.
Saturdays during peak business times are always busy, but with the 23rd falling on a Saturday this year - whew!
That’s like the Super Bowl meets Christmas meets a Taylor Swift concert.
It’s gonna be mayhem, ya’ll.
But mayhem in the best possible way.
If you’re working but not opening, give yourself an extra hour to get to work on time. (No joke).
Bring an extra bottle of water and extra snacks with you. I talk about hydration a lot, and that’s because I talked about it as a store leader, too. I drank at least two liters of water at work every day. Sometimes, I’d crush a liter on my ten-minute break.
All the talking and walking and thinking and doing take a toll quickly.
A liter of water and a granola bar can do wonders. Those two things can revive you quickly and give you the boost you need until the end of your shift.
Coffee is excellent, but after 10:00 am, it was water all the way for me.
Plan now for Saturday. What are you going to wear? What snacks will you bring? Wear your most comfortable shoes.
and
HAVE FUN.
The 23rd is the most fun version of controlled chaos.
High-five your co-workers and stay hydrated.
You got this.
MAILBOX
I got a random DM from someone inviting me to connect. The message was not memorable. What was noteworthy was that this person went through a bunch of my content, liking and commenting on my posts.
Okay, that’s fine.
Sometimes, when people find my work, they go down the rabbit hole and read a lot; that’s not weird.
But this was weird.
He then commented on my looks and asked me what my dog’s name was.
Guess what?
BLOCKED.
Blockety, blocked, blocked, no looking back.
I’ve spent the majority of my life feeling uncomfortable in the presence of that one man - you know, the one - and I refuse to do it anymore. Not in person and not online, either.
This is my world now. You can be cool and be a part of it, or you can get the fuck out.
Please feel free to adopt this strategy for yourself.
LEVEL UP
Make sure others are hydrated, too.
(I know, you think I’m bonkers. It’s okay).
I once had a sales associate on my floor. He wasn’t feeling too great. He was looking pale, and he told me he was feeling off.
“What did you have for breakfast?” I asked.
“A cinnamon role and a coffee.” He replied.
“Oh! That sounds delicious!” I said. “Have you had any water today?”
He thought about it. “No.” He said.
“Do you want to take a quick break and get some water, maybe?” I asked.
He took me up on my offer and returned ten minutes later feeling so much better.
Offer support; however, you need to offer support. It looks different in every situation. Could I have just said, “Oh, you feel sick? That sucks. Welp, tell me if you need to go home.”
I could have, but I’m always looking for a solution. I’m here to help, genuinely. If you need to take an extra break to get water, then do it. No biggie.
Have an absolutely stellar weekend!
Take a moment to rest and recover when you can. Remember, you’re the absolute best.
Stay rad,
Kit
