Hey Party People,
Diwali is next week! This celebration is a big deal to, like, half the planet. It celebrates the triumph of good over evil.
Diwali begins on Monday, October 24th, and is a week-long festival of lights. It’s celebrated primarily by people who follow Hindu, Sikh, and Jain faiths; however, many others partake in the festivities too.
Diwali takes place on the darkest day of the month, the day of the new Moon. The sky is at its darkest, and the celebration of light can shine its brightest. The holiday is celebrated throughout India, Singapore, and other South Asian countries.
Family is a prominent theme, and people go all out for this celebration.
For children in India, Diwali is like Christmas. The kids get a week off from school, gifts, new clothes, food, and fireworks. No wonder everyone looks forward to this holiday. It sounds awesome!
“Wearing their best new clothes, families gather together to eat sweets and other special foods, light diyas (decorative oil lamps), and pray for their ancestors.”
The festival lasts five days, each with a different focus.
Every year, I read about Diwali celebrations, which look so cool. The day that captures my heart is Kukur Tihar. Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to partake.
In Nepal, this day coincides with the second day of Diwali and is celebrated across the country.
Hooray! It’s the celebration of dogs!
Dogs are showered with flowers and garlands and marked with a red tika - a mark of respect and dignity. On this day of celebration, all dogs have an invite to the party - no matter if they are pets or strays.
In 2016, Mexico adopted this festival too. People walked their fuzzy companions, adorned with garlands and tika, to the Revolution Square in Mexico City.
Pet lovers in India celebrate Kukur Tihar, raising awareness for animal rights and welfare.
Man, dogs are totally the best.
If you are celebrating Diwali - cheers! I will admire the photos from afar and raise a glass to you in good health. I wish you the best week of festivities.
