Hey People!
As this newsletter evolves, I've become interested in exploring an anti-hustle lifestyle. I still want to keep you updated with what I'm working on - and I will - but I'm really fascinated by other cultures and how they take breaks and vacations.
We all have a lot to learn from each other.
Americans work a ton and don't typically use all their paid time off. Even when we’re on vacation, we may be checking in while we’re away from the office.
Let's stop doing that! Let's get better at slowing down, being in the moment, and listening to the people in front of us.
Each week I'll bring you a different way to take a break from somewhere in the world. Ready? Yes! I’m so stoked about this.
This week I want to tell you about Fika.
Fika is a coffee break in Sweden, but it's so much more than a coffee break. In America, we order our coffee ahead of time, we drink it in our cars on the way to work. I used to order iced coffee just so I could suck it down faster and get to work more quickly. Lame!
In Sweden, Fika has been described as a social institution or phenomenon. Fika gives people the opportunity to meet and hang out. It's a social opportunity and a networking opportunity. Many workplaces even do this.
"For you sweet little new-Swede, that means two 10 – 30 minutes-extra breaks, called fikarast or fikapaus. When everyone gathers in the meeting room, you better stop working and join the group. You won't get any extra points from your boss when you pretend you have no time for a break because your work is just too important." - HejSweden dot comÂ
How cool is this? I want a fika right now!
As much as I advocate for time off, I am terrible at following my own advice. I need this fika, people. Keep this concept in your back pocket. Try it when you can, and let me know how it goes.
Blockster
I have been writing a lot for Blockster this week. I write company profiles and I will be doing some interviews soon with some super cool people. Head over there and follow me if you have any interest in crypto.
I miss you, Medium
I have not made time to write on Medium lately, and I'm missing it. I've almost got a schedule worked out where I can do both. Stay tuned - I'll be getting back to Medium soon.
This newsletter will pair down to twice a month for free subscribers in April.Â
If you’d like to receive a new edition every week with super cool tips on how to slow down, subscribe below! You’ll also get a new playlist and recipe every month.
For the price of a cup of coffee, you get a personal cheering section in your inbox every week. It’s only $5 a month, what a deal! Let’s do this thing.
I wish you all a fantastic weekend! Take a rest. Take a nod from Sweden, take a fikarest, and put your phone away. Talk to someone in real-time - brilliant!
Slow down and pet your pets. Plan your next vacation - you're probably working too hard.
Until next time -
Peace,
Kit
The name itself, Fika, is just so fun! Makes me smile!
