Dear Travelers,
This week I’m sharing one of my favorite articles with you. I recently published this on Medium.
I was scrolling through the platform, inundated by all the articles that were trying to give me advice. It got to be overwhelming.
How to have a productive morning.
How to make money.
How to run your side-hustle.
How to make even MORE money.
Okay, I get it. All of it can make you feel inadequate. It can make you feel lazy and unorganized or just dumb…why don’t I know this? Then it dawned on me…nobody knows what they’re doing. Not even me. We can give each other advice but this over-posturing of knowledge is draining. So, I wrote the following article.
I hope you enjoy it. Enjoy your weekend as well and know that, whatever you’re doing, it’s enough. Some days are more productive than others and that’s fine. That’s how it should be. Don’t beat yourself up over it or compare yourself to others. Allow yourself to be in the world for the day with no expectations.
Until next time…
Peace,
Kit
All these self-help articles may make you feel like everyone else in the world has it all figured out but let me assure you, they don’t.
I don’t.
I write about stuff that has worked for me. I write about stuff so I can remember to keep doing it. I write because I love writing.
But the harsh reality is — we are on a rock hurling through space. Everything is random. Everything on Earth, humans just made up: religion, culture, society, rules, speed limits. We decided which animals were okay to eat and which ones weren’t. Some people decided that eating no animals was the best way to live. It’s all just made up. We all just made all that up right now.
I know, I’m sorry. It sounds depressing. Nothing you do matters. Who cares? Even though that harsh reality sounds gnarly, it gives us a unique perspective. When you have bad days, take it with a grain of salt. Tomorrow will be totally new and different and also random. You’re welcome!
This doesn’t give you license to be a jerk and burn it all down, mind you. You have to keep your cool. You still have to care for yourself but when you understand that everything is completely up in the air and you still need to be nice to everyone — there’s some comfort in that. Show up and do your best, forget the rest. Be kind.
Everything is energy. Our bodies are made from the earth — iron, calcium, water. We are all connected. Connected to the earth, animals, and each other. This is where the don’t be jerk thing really matters. The energy you put out, you get back.
I know, sounds like hippie shit. Here’s the thing — ever notice how positive people are generally positive and negative people are generally negative? It’s just this cycle of energy. You can break the negativity but you have to be conscious of it. You can spin it into a positive if you want but you have to try. You have to cut the negative energy away from you. It’s hard but possible.
It just takes one person to do it — to not engage. Suddenly the whole group shifts. It starts to feel better. If someone slips back into the negative, call them on it. Stay positive and the energy will evolve in a positive way.
We put so much pressure on ourselves in western society to be and do and strive and compare. It doesn’t have to be like that.
All you need to focus on today is just to exist and be kind. That’s all. Observe all the advice and realize that every person is simply finding their way also. Take any piece of advice that resonates with you or fits your lifestyle, ditch the others. There is no one way to do this thing called life.
I know what works for me and I can share that. That’s about it. Will it work for you? I have no idea! Maybe. That’s cool, right? It could work and you could share it with someone else. How neat! Or it could not work and you’ll have to try something else. That’s okay too. You learned what didn’t work and that’s amazing too.
So, should we just give up? Throw in the towel? No, of course not. Remember, tomorrow will be new and random. It may be stunningly gorgeous. Let’s find out!
And yes, I’m pretty sure I have no idea. No one does. We’re all here experimenting and learning as we go. Helping each other when we can. Learning from each other is the best gift. Accepting each other even though we are all just a huge walking contradiction — that is a beautiful thing.
We are sometimes right, sometimes wrong, and often misunderstood. The longer you live, the more you accept these contradictions in one person. You see people more completely and forgive their shortcomings. It’s all we can do for each other considering we’re just floating out here in space.
But, what do I know?
Yep! It's enough. We're all enough. Thanks, Kit!!!
