Getting a haircut usually makes us feel renewed.
We get professional advice and dedicated time to plan how we want to look. We chat with our stylist, sit with foils in our hair, and wait patiently for it to be shampooed and styled.
We plunk down our credit cards and head back out into the world, feeling more confident.
Am I on TV?
When I leave the salon, I’m pretty sure I’m in a shampoo commercial, and I’m walking in slow motion. My shiny hair flies over my shoulder effortlessly as I turn and smile at the schoolchildren walking home with their books.
Ten pounds have melted away, and my skin is luminous.
My hair is no longer doing that weird flip, and every strand works harmoniously to create this hip new style.
Strangers will pass by me and say to each other, “Did you see her hair? She must be a super cool person with hair like that. It looks great!”
Goldie Hawn Vibes
Okay, okay. It’s not quite that dramatic, but I feel better when I leave.
Today I got my hair cut and colored. It had been a while. About two months. I was growing it out a bit, and it was at that in-between phase where it starts to be straight where you want it to curl and curl when you want it to be straight.
My hair stylist is fantastic, and I’ve been going to her for at least ten years.
I had a bold request, but I knew she was up for the challenge. I asked her to give me lots of layers and bangs (“fringe” for those outside the US).
I brought her this photo of 1980s Goldie Hawn - shaggy blonde hair with full curtain bangs. Messy perfection.
Heavy bangs have always been appealing, but there’s one problem. I’m hella lazy when it comes to my hair. I usually wash it, let it air dry, and then pull it back with the elastic I keep on my wrist. I couldn’t tell you the last time I used a blow dryer or hair products.
But it’s time for a change. I’ve never dared to fully commit to this hairstyle until now.
Did I get Brigitte Bardot or Garth Algar?
When I got home, I stared in front of every mirror. I put my hair up. I put it down. I ran my fingers through my new bangs and fluffed them. I caught a glimpse of myself in the microwave door.
Hmmmmmm.
It’s what I asked for. My hair is grayer than I remember.
Hmmmmmm.
My husband sent me a text since I hadn’t seen him yet: Do you like it?
Me: I don’t know. I’m not sure if it’s Brigitte Bardot or Garth Algar.
Husband: Who?
I sent him a photo of Brigitte Bardot. Beautiful, sexy French actress from the ‘60s. She always had this messy, rebellious hair. She was such a goddess.
Then I sent him a photo of Dana Carvey’s character from Wayne’s World - Garth Algar. Garth also had long blonde hair with bangs. He wore thick black glasses, and with my glasses on, I think I may look like Garth - not Bardot or Hawn as I had intended.
Then I laughed hysterically.
Schedule Stuff You Enjoy
Making a bold style decision is self-care. It helps us define ourselves and shines a light on what we like and think is important.
A haircut makes you feel better even if you play it safe with the cut. You walk a little taller, smile a little easier, and get a day or two off from styling it yourself. What’s not to like?
Schedule stuff you enjoy. Put it on your calendar. If you don’t do it, no one else will.
Get a haircut and then take a walk. Grab a cup of coffee. Relish in all the onlookers who are undoubtedly saying, “Did you see that haircut? How great!”
Then take the rest of the day off. You can’t be expected to work after a day of such significant change and salon-sitting.
I’m exhausted. I don’t even know what I’m still doing on this computer. Alright, off I go to fluff my hair some more, put on my fuzzy socks, and find a movie to watch.
Whatever you do this weekend, I hope it brings you renewed energy. Pour your favorite drink, put your feet up, and pet your pets.
Until next time.
Peace,
Kit

Hilarious! I wasn't sure of the Garth reference at first either. Great fun!
