Turquoise is divine. The light blue stones look like mini pools of water. So many different shades of blue, so many depths. I get lost.
There aren’t too many gems that turn my head. I’m not too into high-end jewelry. I can walk past a jewelry store and admire fancy pieces in the window, but I don’t want those things.
It doesn’t pull at me. It’s not practical. Like, what am I going to do with a diamond necklace? Wear it as I sit at my kitchen table typing away at my computer?
No.
But turquoise- that’s another story.
Turquoise is ultimately cool.
It’s all so different; each stone tells a different story.
Vintage pieces? Forget it. I’m over the moon.
As it turns out, I’m not the only one. Many people around the world have revered turquoise for centuries.
Turquoise Traditions
Turquoise has been used worldwide to celebrate life, heal, and provide protection.
The blue beauty was found in jewelry in ancient Egyptian tombs, dating back to 3000 BCE.
Turkish traders introduced this “Persian blue” stone to Europe via the Silk Road in the 13th century; they influenced the gemstone’s name. The word “turquoise” comes from the French pierre tourques for “Turkish stone.” - American Gem Society
Native Americans used turquoise throughout the Southwestern United States in sacred ceremonies to communicate with the spirit of the sky.
Native Americans thought turquoise was alive with positive energy, which helped mental capabilities and communication, and acted as a protector.
So cool.
Arizona Native
I was born and raised in Southern Arizona, so that could be why I’m super into turquoise. I grew up with it all around me.
My family members wore it. Whenever we would road-trip, we would see people selling it at little stands by the road. We’d always stop and have a look. Then I’d usually talk myself out of whatever caught my eye.
I don’t need it; walk away.
I don’t need it; walk away.
I have a couple turquoise pieces, and I love them. Whenever I wear them, I feel like I have a superpower. I feel more like me. It’s hard to explain.
I put on my chunky turquoise ring; my outfit is instantly complete.
Let’s do this!
Do you have something like this? Something that you’ve always gravitated towards, and you got even more into it as you got older?
That’s what I love about getting older. You get into stuff you love, and you don’t care if anyone else loves it. You do, and that’s all that matters.
Whatever you love, I hope you get to enjoy it this weekend. Pour your favorite drink, pet your pets, and enjoy all the beauty this earth offers - turquoise and all.
Until next time.
Peace,
Kit
