Hello, and welcome to new subscribers!
October is one of my favorite months, and I’m sad to see it winding down.
When I worked in retail, it was my vacation month. (Not the whole month - I wish).
I would always plan a big holiday in October. The longer I worked retail, the more courage I got to ask for more time off.
Eventually, I could manage to schedule two weeks to get away.
I chose October because it was after the back-to-school rush and before the holiday peak. I could escape my store without too much drama. I mean, there is always drama in retail, but October was manageable with me gone for a while.
October was for longer trips, so we’d typically try to plan something international. In October, I’ve been to -
Japan
Quebec
Vancouver
Sayulita - Mexico
New Orleans
Lake Tahoe
And more.
Why should you care about my travels?
Because if you can travel in the Fall, you should do it.
The weather is good
It’s not too hot or too cold. If you visit a place with Fall foliage, you’ll have that going for you. You can drink a cold beer with a salty pretzel or have a cup of tea and a piece of cake - somehow, it all feels right.
I had maple syrup frozen on a stick in Quebec, and it was delightful.
I drank some weird purple alcohol in New Orleans and almost made myself sick. But hey, the weather was perfect, so it almost didn’t matter.
It is not crowded
Schools are back in session, and most people are up to their eyeballs on projects at work. Most places you travel to will not be crowded. There are no big holidays in the Fall (before Thanksgiving), so people aren’t thinking about vacation.
Head to a theme park or hop on a plane. I used to find great deals in October, although this year is weird, so it may be a bit costly.
I’ve wandered through museums with hardly anyone there. I bought a train ticket to head to another part of town last minute. Whatever. You can probably do it in October/early November.
Halloween
Halloween is the only holiday in the early part of Fall, so if you’re not into it, it doesn’t really matter. However, if you are into it, you can find cool stuff to do.
When I was in New Orleans, I happened to catch a giant Halloween parade that was outta sight! I didn’t plan it; I just stumbled into it.
Roam around. Don’t plan too much. Be surprised and go with the flow.
Just don’t drink that purple drink.
Take a day trip
I didn’t take a big trip this month, but I’m looking into a few day trips.
I’ll head to LA for the day and maybe Joshua Tree. I’m going to take some hikes, look around, and hopefully toast some s’mores.
Getting away doesn’t have to be weeks at a time; it can be small. It can be a day. It can be an hour. Take a drive. Take a walk. Visit a neighborhood that you haven’t been to in a while. Mix up your routine.
You’ll come back refreshed.
The other day I had a vaccine appointment early in the morning, forcing me to walk around my neighborhood before it got busy. Honestly, it felt like a mini-vacation. I know, that sounds sad (really, Kit? A vaccine appointment?)
But it was cool outside and quiet. I walked around with my coffee before things got noisy and crowded.
I strolled.
When I got home, I had more energy to jump into my to-do lists than I thought.
So, you never know. Again, mix it up and see what happens.
Kit on a podcast
April Sabral, CEO and founder of retailu, was kind enough to invite me to her podcast, The Positive Effect on LinkedIn, this week. We had a fun conversation about leadership and what it takes to run a retail building.

The latest in Web3
Last week, I wrote about a movement called Solarpunk. It’s this ideology that rejects the idea of a dystopian future. One that embraces blockchain tech and biophilic designs. It’s pretty cool and totally inspiring.
You can read it on FastBlocks - the only truly decentralized news.
Have a great weekend, people. Enjoy Halloween if that’s your thing.
Take a moment to put your feet up, pour your favorite drink, and pet your pets.
DEEP BREATH
Until next week.
Peace,
Kit

Travel in the fall is definitely rad! I always try and take a week around this time of year. As someone that has to fly standby, the loads are usually lighter and chances of getting where you want go higher.
This year, my son's HS soccer team was busy making a deep run into the playoffs, and our vacation consisted of "traveling" to his stadium for games, and driving to another one yesterday. Not exactly glamorous, but absolutely bonkers, and a week I wouldn't trade for anything.
Short or long trips or mix it up! Perfect and I needed that reminder. Thanks!
